Getting Started

Looking for some essential supplies to get you started? I've made it easy by collating some of my favorite things: from sculpting, to painting, to books, linked below.

Sculpting Essentials:

Metal Sculpting Tools ( I like these for mooshing bigger areas, creases, or just scooping epoxy from a tub)
  • Sculpting Spatula **MY FAV** (I use this every time I sculpt)
  • Ball Stylus Set (these are incredible for wrinkles and detailing. You can also get bigger sizes for muscle sculpting)
  • Activ Wire Mesh (this is the base of a lot of my manes and tails, along with wire)
  • Armature Wire (1/8" is appropriate for most larger scale pieces, 1/16" would be good for stablemates)
  • Super Glue (this glue is thin but not too thin, and should work with baking soda, if needed)
  • Gloves (these are my favorite gloves for sculpting and painting in!)
  • Lint-Free Paper Towels
  • AMC Sculpting Tools
I have a variety of these (Pointed Spatula, Rounded Spatula, Half Spatula,  Pointed Claw, Hook) and they are all fantastic.
  • Magic Sculpt - 5 LB Tub
^You can also get smaller samples, or try different colors, this seller is amazing (and is not me,)

Painting Favorites:

  • MAGICAL Deerfoot Brushes (for soft pastel application)
  • Cheap Set of Brushes for Painting (these don't shed and I actually love them, and I don't feel bad when I forget to clean one)

Essential Books For Painters:

(these are also great for sculptors too, they are all PICTURES in color of various breeds, I have them all and they are all fantastic!)
  • Horse Images For Artists
  • Isolated Horse Images for Artists
  • Horse and Mule Images for Artists
  • Foals: Horse Images for Artists

Essential Reads and References For Sculpting:

How Your Horse Moves
  • Horse Anatomy For Performance
^^Both of these are amazing! Lots of useful pictures and information without getting overly technical
  • Essential Hoof Book
^if you plan on focusing on scupting, this book I would also consider an essential..."no hoof, no horse" after all!
  • Atlas of Animal Anatomy for Artists
  • Horse Anatomy Coloring Book
^This coloring book is useful in that you can color certain muscle groups, etc to learn them a bit better.
  • Horses and Other Animals in Motion
^this is probably the least useful as the pictures are small, but its a neat way to see the stages of the horses gait
